Ross J Slade
Ross J Slade, the President and Senior Designer of RJS ID Inc, a company he created in 1986.
Ross has an undergraduate degree in Industrial Design (BID) from Carleton University in Ottawa. As one of the original six graduates he completed two years in Architecture before switching to the final two years of Industrial Design. While still completing this course, he was employed, initially by Quattra Enterprises Ltd., a consulting design firm and followed this with two summers of "Design Interpretive", of Bell Northern Research.
Upon graduation he moved to Toronto. For one year worked with, and then managed Creelman International, a multi discipline design firm located in Weston Ontario.
This was followed by a graduate degree at the Royal College of Art in London England from which he graduated in 1981 with a Masters Degree, an MDesRCA.
Seven plus years were then spent working for Canada Post Corporation, at Headquarters in Ottawa. As Manager, Corporate and Industrial Design, he created a design consultancy within the Corporation and was involved in everything from design of Retail Counters and mail boxes to specifications for human factors. Among other things he was the designer of the SuperMailbox.
In 1986 he left Canada Post Corporation and created RJS ID Inc. This company has been involved with a variety of Ottawa based high tech industries. Work has included product design, graphic design, exhibit design and multimedia work.
Ross was at various times a professional member of the Association of Industrial Designers, the Graphic Design Association and a member of the Human Factors Association. As the nature of business altered, membership in these groups has lapsed. For many year he coordinated the Special Interest Group for Design and Graphics for the Ottawa area Apple Macintosh community. He was a sessional lecturer at a local community college in the 'Business of Design' for a few years and has been active in teaching young designers about design and the use of computer hardware and software as a design tool. He has also been a guest lecturer at a few 'MacWorlds' - the 'love-in'/informational conference held on Apple Macintosh related affairs.
In the summer of 2005 the company ceased to exist as it was incorporated in Ontario and Ross relocated to Umbria Italy. He continues to undertake work on a freelance basis as requested.
