TORRACCIA in PIATTAFORMA - RECONSTRUCTION UPDATE
I have included below the inital message regarding the need for fund raising to cover the expense of rebuilding the lower bar or Torraccia that provided the Comune with another venue for summer enjoyment. As mentioned on the previous page, the official re-opening was on July 21st 2007.
Beside thanks expressed to those that have already donated time, labour, material and dollars - a very long list - it was highlighted that THE GOAL OF 20,000 EUROS HAS YET TO BE REACHED. The image above has been altered from that below, by showing the remaining amount required in red (approx 5000 Euros), and the inclusion of the new building on opening night, rather than the proposed structure shown below
Donations are accepted at both the Post Office and the local bank - just tell them you want to make a donation to the Torraccia Fund.
Again PLEASE DONATE as you are able.
As most are aware, there was a fire that destroyed the summer bar, run by the ProLoco for the enjoyment of all of us. While it seemed to provide some initial sensationalism as it burnt, on sober second thought, it was found to be uninsured and no one was found responsible for the blaze. We were left with the memory of a superbly successful last season, provided by the Proloco, and the anticipation of a very bleak summer, under these new circumstances.
Obviously as a town we need to be more aware of what is happening around us - the local police have neither the resources nor mandate to provide 24/7 coverage of the whole area - and as a community, we need to insure structures such as this, that might be 'at risk'
This last Wednesday, there was a public meeting in the comune meeting hall to discuss the reconstruction effort. As the sole straniero present - and with my limited knowledge of Italian, I have understood, from this meeting, the following:
- some want to point a finger at the police for not providing coverage and it was reasonably pointed out, that they could not be expected to do so.
- some felt insurance was a waste of money and it was stated that rebuilding without insurance was not an acceptable option.
- the Comune had found some money; I heard the sum of 4000€ mentioned.- the materials were being donated or provided at cost and the construction crew was voluntary.
- given the summer role of the space, it needed to be rebuilt and the balance of the money would need to be raised. If all paid a bit, it would not amount to very much each.
- some ideas regarding fundraising were discussed and will be considered further.
- all residents were provided with a donation form, to be returned either to the post office or the local bank, with a donation that they could afford.
- I enquired as to how many people/families might be expected to make a donation. I don't think I got what I would call a definitive answer !
- they would love 1000€, they are hoping for 100€ or better per family, and are expecting quite a few donations of 10€ per person.Obviously 200 families at 100€ each, would provide the funds required. Some of us work, some of us are on pensions and some of us are on fixed incomes, so our individual abilities obviously vary.
PLEASE DONATE as you are able. If you have not yet received the required form, they can probably help you in the post office or the bank.
